The Ministry of Municipality, represented by the Department of Agricultural Affairs, yesterday launched the working season of the local agricultural product yards at Al Mazrouah, Al Wakra, Al Khor-Al Thakhira, Al Shamal and Al Sheehaniya.
A statement from the ministry said the yards at Al Mazrouah, Al Khor-Al Thakhira and Al Wakra will work throughout the week while the yards at Al Sheehaniya and Al Shamal will be open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Ahmed al-Yafei, head of the Guidance and Services Department, Agricultural Affairs, said this season’s opening comes in continuation of the previous successful seasons, aiming to support Qatari farmers and local products.
The majority of the local farms are participating in he initiative during this season, he said, noting that the local products are of a high quality.
More than 100 farms are taking part in the initiative and all kinds of vegetables, except tomatoes, cabbage etc are on sale. Various types of eggplant, peppers, melons, fig, mushrooms as well as roses are available, all produced by local farms.
The local product yards offer a direct marketing platform to the Qatari farmer to deal with the consumer without an intermediary. The yards are also characterised by the low prices of products.
