Qatar winning the membership of the UN Human Rights Council with the support of 182 countries affirms the continuous endeavours to enhance human rights and crowns its noble efforts in the international issues, HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohamed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani said on Friday.
“The State of Qatar considers the protection and maintenance of human rights as one of the main strategic pillars of its foreign policy, and a main factor to achieve prosperity and peace,” he stated in a tweet.
Official Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported that the 76th session of the UN General Assembly elected Qatar to membership of the UNHRC with a majority of 182 votes for three years starting January 2022. 
“The large number of Member States that voted in favor of the election of Qatar for the fifth time since the establishment of the Human Rights Council in 2006, embodies the confidence of the international community in the active and positive role played by the country in the field of protection and promotion of human rights and related issues.
“It also reflects the well-established approach and policy of the State of Qatar towards the promotion and protection of human rights at the local, regional and international levels, and the fulfillment of its obligations in this regard.
“The election of the State of Qatar comes in recognition of its wide record of initiatives to bring peace in the world and support mediation and dialogue between countries to resolve conflicts.
“Qatar was elected on behalf of the group of Asian and Pacific countries. The 15 members of the Human Rights Council were elected for the period 2022-2024,” QNA added.
