The recent announcement by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on holding the Shura Council elections in October next year has been welcomed by some prominent Qatari women who are currently members of the Central Municipal Council (CMC) as well as former CMC poll candidates, describing this as a historic opportunity for Qatari women -- whether as candidates or voters.
They told local Arabic daily 'Arrayah' recently that Qatari women have proven their ability to serve their country and assume positions of public service in different fields. Besides, they stressed that the chances of winning in the upcoming elections are bright for women due to the high level of awareness within the society about the important role of women.
CMC member Sheikha al-Jufairi expects the competition at the 2021 Shura Council elections to be strong and challenging, while also noting that women have a good chance of winning. Al-Jufairi said she has been an elected CMC member five times and things have changed for the good of women over these years as people have started accepting this particular role for women. The council now has two elected women members, which gives hopes for more women to succeed in public work.
Fatima al-Kuwari, another CMC member, stressed that the 2021 Shura Council elections will be a great milestone in terms of Qatar's development and in the field of legislation in the country. She expressed her belief that Qatari women have proven themselves to be highly qualified in public service and can overcome all the challenges with the support of various related entities in the country.
Fatima al-Jusaiman, a Qatari businesswoman, expressed happiness at His Highness the Amir's announcement as it opens a new door for Qatari women to assume public roles in the service of the country. A former candidate in the CMC polls, she feels that competition in the Shura Council elections will give more women courage to go ahead and play an active role in society. She added that everybody is eager to hear more details of this in the future.
Fatimah al-Gazal, another former CMC candidate, stressed that history and experience have proven the importance and great potential of Qatari women to compete in and win public elections. Besides, she thinks that the success of women in this area would reflect positively on the council.
