The Ministry of Municipality and Environment (MME) will hold national dialogues on August 8-9 to discuss ways to develop food systems in Qatar.
Director of the Food Security Department at the ministry and National Co-ordinator of the UN Food Systems Summit 2021 Dr Masoud Jarallah al-Marri said at the conclusion of Qatar's participation in the preparatory meeting for the summit, which was held in the Italian capital, Rome, that the MME is conducting the final arrangements to hold the national dialogues, which will include sessions to discuss issues related to the development of food systems in Qatar.
Al-Marri pointed out that the dialogues come as a prelude to fulfilling the requirements for Qatar's participation in the UN conference scheduled for next September.
He explained that the dialogue sessions will be attended by government and private agencies, consumers, traders, scientists and researchers, as direct discussions will take place among them regarding the development of food systems and the challenges facing food systems at all stages.
The Food Systems Summit will be held at the end of September at the level of state leaders and chaired by the UN Secretary-General. The summit will be the first of its kind and aims to make progress in all 17 sustainable development goals by 2030.
Earlier, in a recorded speech to the preparatory meeting for the summit, HE the Minister of Municipality and Environment and Acting Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Dr Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki al-Subaie had underlined that Qatar sought to build a high-performance food system in the most sustainable way, and enhance and improve the economy to become diversified and competitive and improve living standards, while achieving compatibility and harmony between economic, social and environmental development, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030.
HE the Minister emphasised the successful food system in Qatar, thanks to the concerted efforts and co-operation between a number of sectors and a wide range of stakeholders, noting that a national committee that brings together all stakeholders from the government and the private sectors co-ordinates the implementation of the national strategy for food security, where consumers, traders, food manufacturers and producers, researchers, students and policymakers constitute a solid foundation for the development and implementation of the national food security initiatives.
He highlighted Qatar's efforts to improve food systems in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030, through projects and programmes that have been implemented to strengthen the food system in the country to confront food insecurity at the regional and global levels, and to meet future aspirations.
