The General Directorate of Traffic is implementing intensified awareness programmes to address the issue of reckless motorbike driving on Qatar roads. Capt Abdul Wahid al-Anzi, Traffic Awareness Officer, recently told Al Rayyan TV that an action plan is being implemented in coordination with delivery companies and youth centres in order to eliminate the accidents and reckless driving on roads.
He said the department implemented more than 40 awareness sessions in various parts of the country in co-operation with companies while five of them were carried out during Ramadan. “We focus on common violations and dangers due to reckless driving,” he said.
Al-Anzi noted that overspeeding is the major violation that causes accidents while the annoying sound of motorbikes causes disturbance at residential areas.
Earlier this year, a finding by the Hamad Injury Prevention Programme (HIPP) at Hamad Medical Corporation's (HMC) Hamad Trauma Centre, said that Qatar is witnessing an increase in motorbike accidents after Covid-19 restrictions on restaurants came into effect and home delivery began to flourish.
Also, the Traffic Department is working to establish a special committee to list all delivery companies that own motorbikes with the aim of having traffic awareness programmes for this category of road users.
