Turkey's Defence Ministry on Sunday said that one of the country's soldiers had been killed during clashes with fighters from the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in northern Iraq.
The clashes with the "terrorists" took place as part of Operation Claw-Tiger, the ministry said. Turkey launched the operation along with a parallel air offensive known as Claw-Eagle against PKK targets in northern Iraq last week.
The PKK is headquartered in the Qandil Mountains near the Iranian border and is considered a terrorist organisation by Turkey, Europe and the United States. Turkish airstrikes have targeted sites in the mountains, as well as in Sinjar and in a border region in northern Iraq that Turkey calls Haftanin.
