The African Group of Ambassadors in Doha lauded and thanked the Qatar government for what it described as “highly elaborate and timely interventions” in preventing the spread of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19), protecting the lives and livelihood of many people in the country and abroad.
“The African Group of Ambassadors wishes to express its utmost gratitude to His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani for his wise and visionary leadership, both locally and internationally, in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic that has brought dignity and honour to the State of Qatar and its people,” Dr Mamadou Mamoudou Sall, president of the Group and also the Senegal ambassador to Qatar, said in a statement.
“As one of the very few countries in the world that has put in place the highest standards of healthcare and consequently, recorded the lowest incident of coronavirus related deaths vis-à-vis very high number of testing opportunities placed at the disposal of the population, Qatar has set for itself admirable best practices that she could share for the benefit of other countries around the world,” the envoy said.
The Group also lauded Qatar Airways for flying more than one million stranded passengers to their respective countries and transporting more than 100,000 metric tonnes of medical aid and humanitarian relief to Covid-19-affected countries around the world.
Sall stressed that the award-winning airline’s recent offer of 100,000 round-trip air-tickets, gratis to frontline healthcare professionals worldwide is highly commendable.
On the domestic front, the envoy highlighted “the timely adoption and gradual rolling out of elaborate precautionary and preventive measures, mechanisms, guidelines and protocols towards containing and curbing the potential spread of Covid-19 when and wherever it occurs within the state by the Qatar government is worthy of applause and emulation.”
The Group cited all the different forms of assistance extended to African governments, particularly generous medical aid or other logistics in the continent’s fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.
Sall added that “these resources undoubtedly enhanced the capacity of each beneficiary to better protect citizenry and inhabitants those nations.”
“In the same vein, the African Group of Ambassadors wishes to acknowledge with extreme gratitude, for the different forms of direct or indirect assistance and support to African nationals living in the State of Qatar by the state government, businesses, Qatar Charity and other humanitarian agents/agencies, being provided by the enabling environment that led to the amelioration and/or the lessening the potential economic burdens on members of our resident communities during these difficult times,” the envoy said.
The Group, the envoy noted, is ready to further collaborate with the Qatar government on the global efforts to address the economic, and social consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The African Group of Ambassadors wishes to avail itself of this opportunity to assure the Government of the State of Qatar of our commitment in continuing to provide guidance to the African communities on abiding by all the public health guidelines and protocols prudently laid out by the competent Qatari authorities,” Sall said.
