Food and beverage (F&B) outlets and retailers at the ‘Summer Entertainment City’ (SEC) have recorded a growth in sales during its initial run this year following an “excellent” response from visitors, an official of QSports has said.
For the second staging of the SEC until August 23 at the Doha Exhibition and Convention Centre (DECC), F&B and retail vendors are expecting more sales considering the Entertainment City attracted around 10,000 visitors in the first four days of Eid al-Adha.

The Entertainment City has a wide range of food options available

SEC head of Business Development Unit Aya Kassab told Gulf Times that there are as many as 57 retail shops at the SEC offering a variety of products from perfumes, assorted toys, furniture and lamps, as well as men’s, women’s, and kids’ apparel, among other items.
Similar to the first phase of the SEC, QSports is also showcasing around 45 different food stalls for either dine-in or takeaway to provide a variety of options for visitors, Kassab pointed out.
“The response of the people to the selection of vendors and stalls during the first phase of SEC was quite excellent, and for this reason, we are not limiting the number of food options during this next stage.
“All our food vendors had reported growth in terms of sales during the previous SEC, considering that the first phase of the Entertainment City had served close to 60,000 people. Most of the visitors, of whom around 70% to 75% were Qataris, mostly spend for the food options available in the venue,” she explained.
According to Kassab, taking centre stage at this year’s at SEC are food entrepreneurs,
90% of whom are mostly young Qatari startup owners introducing new coffee shops, snack bars, and other homegrown novelty products.
“The Entertainment City has become a good platform for small businesses. The reopening of the SEC last August 9 added more interesting activities so that kids have a reason to come back and enjoy the venue and its amenities, and this eventually helped these retail and food vendors grow their businesses,” Kassab stressed.
Earlier, Kassab said the SEC had added more entertainment options, which included more rides and several more activities for different age groups, such as an inflatable maze, giant slide, and other attractions.
QSports, which had organised the Entertainment City, in collaboration with the Qatar National Tourism Council (QNTC) had earlier lauded the council’s efforts in spurring more activities during the summer break.
Kassab underscored the “vital role” QNTC has been playing in offering residents and tourists with more options to enjoy the summer season in Qatar. Similarly, the QNTC’s ‘Summer in Qatar’ (SiQ) 2019 programme garnered a huge success in promoting Qatar as a tourism destination in the region.
