Public Works Authority (Ashghal) will start work on the first phase of Lusail Expressway project, which stretches from the Pearl Roundabout to Golf Club Roundabout, from  November 17, 2012.
The work involves closing and demolishing the existing North Canal Crossing bridge, construction of a Light Rail Tunnel and a new North Canal Crossing bridge in two stages.
The closure will last from November 17 until the completion of project.
During this period, Al Jameaa Street will be the alternative route to the Golf Club, Lusail International Circuit, residential compounds and all other sites located at the north of the canal.
To cater for this additional traffic on Al Jameaa Street, Ashghal has already developed and implemented intersection and improvements on the street.
The North Canal Crossing bridge work is the first section being undertaken on the broader Lusail Expressway which forms a part of Qatar’s Expressway Programme, one of the most important infrastructure projects under Ashghal’s remit.
The entire Lusail Expressway programme involves the reconstruction and upgrading of the existing Lusail Road from south of Al Wahda Street (Arch Roundabout) to the North Canal Crossing totaling approximately 5.3km in length.
The project includes three major interchanges and dual four lanes serving the new development areas in the north of Doha.
Existing major development areas such as The Pearl and Katara will also benefit greatly from the project with improved interchanges and better journey times for residents, businesses and visitors to the area.
With its network of tunnels, flyovers and junctions, the Lusail Expressway responds to future traffic demands and delivers a modern road network that will connect people and places with speed and ease.
This is in addition to the extensive artscape and beautification scheme installed along the project.
Last May Ashghal awarded the contract for Lusail Expressway construction project estimated at QR3.57bn to Hyundai Engineering and Construction.
Ashghal is working on an integral Expressway Programme, a nationwide road infrastructure programme involving around 30 highway projects that will improve the way people and places are connected across the city of Doha and wider Qatar.
