Al Feroz Younsters tamed Warriors Club by five wickets and won the prestigious Qatar Airways Premier Division Cricket Tournament at the Asia Town Cricket Stadium.
Qatar Airways, one of the youngest airlines in the world with a strong presence in all six continents, is the sponsor of the tournament and has been supporting the Qatar Cricket Association in the development of the sport in the country for long time.
Qatar Cricket Association president Yousef Jeham al-Kuwari, Qatar Airways Ticketing Operations manager Ali Akbar Farabi, Eissa Yaqoob and QCA officials were present at the closing ceremony. Al-Kuwari presented the trophies and awards.
The decision by Warriors Club to bat first after winning the toss backfired as they lost two wickets and were reeling two for 21. Though Adnan and Assad collected 63 runs for the third wicket and just when they seemed to be hauling out their team out of the hole, another collapse was masterminded by Faisal Khan.
Khan went on to finish with three for 12, while five of the remaining six bowlers that Al Feroz Youngsters used picked a wicket each to restrict the opponents at 131 for nine in 25 overs. Inam-Ul Haq, Hemayun, Noman Sarvar, Mohamed Tanveer and Imran Ashraf all shared five of the wickets.
Adnan made a patient 39 off 50 deliveries with three fours. Assad got 27 in 39 balls, while Nayeem added 17 not out with two fours in his 13-ball knock.
After losing Khan (13 runs) early at 28, Al Feroz Youngsters steadied the chase with a 62-run stand for the second wicket, shared by Qalandar and Tanveer. They suffered a slump and lost in all four wickets for just at this stage.
With the target however been not very stiff, Al Feroz Youngsters raced to the win in 16.4 overs. Qalandar, the surviving opener, hit 40. His 35-ball knock had a six and four boundaries. Tanveer made 38 with half a dozen boundaries.
Hemayun followed up his one wicket with a 20 not out to see the team home. Umar grabbed three wicket for 45, Adnan and Praveeth bagged one each.
Later, Faisal Khan of Al Feroz Youngsters was adjudged the Man of the Final.
“Congratulations to winners Al Feroz Youngsters for a fine performance in the final and claiming the title of the Qatar Airways Premier Cricket Tournament. We, at the QCA, are once again grateful to world famous Qatar Airways and wish to thank its Group Chief Executive Mr Akbar al-Baker for continuing the backing to our tournament for such a long time,” QCA president al-Kuwari said.
“We hope that the Qatar Airways would maintain the partnership with us to promote the sport and help players grow. Soon the national team would go to Kuwait to take part in the Asian regional qualifiers for the ICC Twenty20 World Cup. I hope that all the players were able to fine-tune themselves with valuable match practice during the Qatar Airways Tournament and are now ready to do Qatar proud.”
