Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) will present its Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony concert at the Katara – the Cultural Village Opera House on March 10 at 7.30pm. Andreas Sebastian Weiser is the conductor of honour at the event with Hassan Moataz El Molla on the cello.
The programme will feature Friedrich Gulda: Concerto for Cello and Wind Orchestra and Ludwig van Beethoven: Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67, QPO said in a statement.
Austrian composer Gulda was one of the Classical pianists who marked the post-war time, a fervent and accomplished jazz musician, a master of improvisation and a defier of aesthetic conservatism. His often-provocative behaviour — jazz improvisations in the middle of classical pieces, renouncing Beethoven’s Bicentennial Ring in 1970, unconventional dressing, etc. — affirmed the expression of a personal liberty that rebutted any limitation.
Gulda achieved a triumphal success at New York’s Carnegie Hall in 1950 and became famous for his Mozart interpretations that respected scrupulously the composer’s indications and, in particular, the piano concertos for which he wrote admirable cadenzas.
Meanwhile, Beethoven was the last big figure of Viennese Classicism after Gluck, Haydn and Mozart. He also prepared the evolution towards musical romanticism. His influence was tremendous on all occidental music genres and lasted for a long period of the 19th century.
In 1811-1812, Beethoven attained undoubtedly the apogee of his creative life in the Archduke Trio and the seventh and eighth symphonies. His other noteworthy compositions include a few masterpieces from his complete-deafness years: the Cello Sonatas No. 4 and 5 (1815), the Piano Sonata No. 28 (1816), the poignant lieder cycle a die ferne Geliebte (To The Distant Beloved, 1815-1816), and the Hammerklavier Sonata (1717–1718).
Weiser, a graduate of the Berlin University of the Arts, was a finalist in the first annual Arturo Toscanini International Conducting Competition held in Italy in 1985. He has conducted many famous orchestras.
Hassan Moataz El Molla joined the Cairo Conservatory at the age of nine to study with Professor Ayman el Hanbouly. He graduated in 2001 with high degrees. As a soloist, he performed with the Cairo Opera Orchestra, the Cairo Symphony Orchestra and the Academy of Arts Orchestra. He participated in the international UBS Verbier orchestra as a principal cellist in 2006, working with many well-known conductors and musicians such as J Livien, L Slatkin, Y Bashmet, Gatti and M Maisky. He was also a member of the UBS Verbier Chamber Orchestra.
