Qatar Foundation, in association with Z Adventures and TriClub Doha, has announced that registration has opened for the second race in the Qatar Foundation GMC Triathlon Series.
This follows the success of the recent Doha Triathlon at MIA Park and the Corniche, according to a statement.
The event, taking place on February 24 at Education City, will feature two new race categories, the organisers have said, stressing this will offer new competition and opportunities to introduce newcomers to the sport.
The event will feature the first Corporate Triathlon Championship, where teams of three will race either as a relay team, or as individuals, against teams from other companies and organisations. Already, teams are being formed by Mannai, the primary sponsor, Qatar Foundation (QF), Qatar Airways, Doha College and Deloitte.
The first category will be a Team Relay Challenge, where three participants will choose one of three disciplines each (swimming, cycling or running) and complete the 500m swim, 20km bike and 5km run course. The team with the fastest cumulative time will win the challenge.
The second – and “more challenging” – event designed for more experienced competitors is the Corporate Triathlon Championship, where three or more team members will each complete the entire course individually and score points based on their final position. The team with the most points (from the three highest scores) wins the championship.
Mannai Auto Group, on behalf of GMC, will provide trophies for the winning team, finishers’ shirts and medals for each participant.
The second new competition, following the same format, is the School Triathlon Championship, with prizes for the best primary school, secondary school and university.
Students may enter as a team relay or as individuals in teams of three or more. The race distances range from 100m swim, 3km bike and 1.25km run for children aged 7-9 years to longer 200m swim, 10km bike and 2.5km run for older kids. Students aged 16 years and above will complete the adult course.
Ewan Cameron, race director and representative of Mannai Corporation, said: “We are really excited to introduce these new race categories to the GMC Triathlon Series in order to introduce new people to our sport.”
Simon Jones from QF added, “We are pleased to host these races at Education City as we believe that triathlon is a great way for our students and employees to be active and in line with the foundation’s goals.”
Registration can be done at a1registration.net, with entry closing on February 22 unless sold out before.
